Family Counseling

Strengthen relationships and improve communication within your family

What is Family Counseling?

Family counseling brings family members together to work through challenges, improve communication, and strengthen relationships. Rather than focusing on one individual, family therapy looks at how the entire family system functions and interacts.

Our therapists help families identify unhealthy patterns and develop new ways of relating to one another. Whether you're dealing with a specific crisis or want to improve everyday dynamics, family counseling provides a safe space for everyone to be heard.

  • Improved Communication - Learn to express needs and listen effectively
  • Conflict Resolution - Develop healthy ways to handle disagreements
  • Stronger Bonds - Rebuild trust and connection between family members
  • Coping Strategies - Navigate transitions and challenges together

Family Counseling FAQs

Who attends family counseling sessions?

It depends on your family's specific situation. Sometimes the whole family attends together, while other times the therapist may work with different combinations of family members. Your therapist will help determine what arrangement works best for your goals.

How long does family counseling take?

Most families see meaningful progress within 8-12 sessions, though this varies based on the complexity of the issues. Some families benefit from a few sessions to address a specific concern, while others may continue therapy longer to work through deeper patterns.

What if not everyone in the family wants to participate?

It's common for some family members to be hesitant at first. We can start with those who are willing and often find that reluctant members join later as they see positive changes. Even working with part of the family can create meaningful improvements in the family system.

Do you work with blended families and stepfamilies?

Yes, we have extensive experience working with blended families. Merging households brings unique challenges around boundaries, loyalty conflicts, and establishing new family dynamics. We help stepfamilies build trust and create a unified home environment.

Can children participate in family therapy?

Absolutely. We work with families that include children of all ages. Our therapists are skilled at engaging children in age-appropriate ways and helping parents understand their children's perspectives. Sometimes sessions include play-based activities for younger children.

How is family counseling different from individual therapy?

Individual therapy focuses on one person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Family counseling looks at the relationships and patterns between family members. Often, issues that seem individual actually stem from family dynamics, and addressing them together creates more lasting change.

What issues can family counseling address?

Family counseling can help with communication problems, parent-child conflicts, behavioral issues, divorce and co-parenting, blending families, grief and loss, supporting a family member with mental health challenges, major life transitions, and rebuilding trust after conflict.

Do you offer telehealth family sessions?

Yes, we offer virtual family counseling for families throughout Arizona via telehealth. Video sessions work well when family members have busy schedules or live in different locations. Some families prefer a combination of in-person sessions at our Mesa office and virtual sessions.

What if we need help with our marriage too?

We often see families where the parents' relationship needs attention alongside family dynamics. Our therapists offer marriage counseling that can run parallel to or integrated with family therapy depending on what works best for your situation.

Do you offer specialized services for teens?

Yes! We offer teen counseling for adolescents who may benefit from individual sessions alongside family therapy. We also have DBT groups for teens that teach coping skills which can complement family work.
